Most days now you are going poop on the potty and rarely in your diapers, and also piddling in the potty. It’s funny because you don’t seem bothered much by being in a wet cloth diaper, but you certainly are catching on pretty fast.

Today we went to the lab for some standard one year bloodwork. You didn’t like that much but an animal cracker afterwards seemed to help a bit.

You’re like a little monkey these days, copying what mommy and daddy do. This week you blew a kiss to grandpa as you were leaving, bringing your flattened hand to your lips and blowing on it, as mommy did. Eating dinner, you’ll hold a hand up to “high five” mine, and you are starting to comprehend raising your sippy cup with our glasses, when we say “Cheers”.

You love to bellyflop on the pillows in the morning on our bed, all full of smiles and giggles. If mommy sleeps in later than you and daddy (Mark: “if???”) you will thump on the closed door when you decide it’s time for me to get up. It’s pretty easy to make you laugh. Being tickled also generates little belly hiccups of laughter.

We’re working on getting you into your crib without being nursed to lullabye land with a bottle of warm milk. You protest vehemently. I sit by your crib on a chair and try to soothe you, you aren’t sure why I’m being so horrible to you and you pull yourself up to standing, with tears in your eyes. I tell you “No, lie down or Mommy leaves” and as I start to stand up to go, you promptly plunk yourself back down, protesting just as loudly in case I didn’t hear already. Oh, it’s hard on a mommy’s heartstrings to do this, and we probably should have been more disciplined earlier on, but you were just so cuddle-able. We’re getting there, though, and it’s only nighttime bottle feedings now.

You crawl very fast now up on your knees, and you’re cautiously making progress toward walking. (I’m not in a big hurry, either!) You put one foot in front of the other and take real steps when we hold your hands.

Funny thing this morning… I was preparing your lunch in the kitchen. It got strangely quiet, I turned and you were no longer sitting on the living room floor where you had been a few seconds earlier. I went immediately to look for you down the hall, you weren’t in the bathroom, you weren’t in our bedroom, no sign of you in your bedroom. I called out “Taite….!” and hurried back to the living room. There you sat, looking inquisitively at me from the other side of the safety gate, which had been left open. You had crawled out and somehow successfully gotten down the step into the dining room. You looked up at me, as if you were quite proud of your accomplishment. Walking… who needs to walk???

We decided to keep your first birthday party small and only have close friends and family so it wouldn’t be too overwhelming. Nolan, Katie and Abby, and Paul-Scott attended. (Unfortunately Dimitri was sick so couldn’t make it.) You all played and ran around and got all tuckered out. At one point, even before cake time, you had placed your head on the hardwood floor, as if exhausted. At cupcake time, you sat at the head of the table, your eyes gazing off like you were ready to fall asleep. “Happy Birthday to you” we started singing, placing the lit candles and cupcake in front of you, and you quickly ascertained that this must be all about you and your eyes lit up. We helped you blow out your candle, and you started the discovery of chocolate.

Measurements at 1st Birthday:
Weight: 20.5 lbs (25%)
Height: 30.3″ (90%)

Your Accomplishments:

  • You pull up and stand, and kerplunk yourself (ever-so-cautiously) back to the ground.
  • You recognize “Where’s Daddy/Mommy/Grandma/Grandpa” and look to the appropriate candidate. You also know “Where’s baby”, pointing to your dolly, with one eyebrow often raised in delight.
  • You eat very well, especially happy when there’s food you can pinch between your fingers and bring to your mouth. Cheerios especially. By the fistful, if you get your druthers.
  • You’re being weaned from the bottle, usually it’s reserved only for nightime now (shhh, soon that’s going too).
  • You had first bowel movement in little pink potty the day after your first birthday. You sat on it, read a book, and pooped. The next day you piddled twice in potty. You’re quite happy to sit there on the floor on your own potty, me on big toilet, and read together.
  • You can go to sleep on your own for naps, thoughbeit reluctantly, without being soothed with a bottle. I pat your back, reassure you, you holler, I leave (it breaks my heart!), you continue to holler, I come back, pat your back, reassure you. Finally you’ll drift off as I stroke your hair and pat your back. The process is getting shorter each day. But NO bottle, yay.
  • Two top teeth and two bottom teeth. Another one on top starting to poke through.
  • You crawl on all fours now, and sometimes still the army/commando crawl, slithering on your tummy and pulling forward with your arms.
  • Whenever someone claps you love to happily clap along.
  • Hearing songs you recognize from Music Together, or songs with very strong rhythm on the radio, you bob your head side-to-side, looking up as if to say, “Hey, I know this!”
  • If I say “Give Mommy kisses”, you bring your mouth close to my lips, and look into my eyes. You haven’t learned to pucker yet.

Your Favorite Things to Do:

  • Going for walks to the park, playing with other kids
  • Library Storytime, socializing with other kids (notice the theme here?)
  • Swimming in the pool (ours or at AVAC)
  • Pulling books from your bookshelf and flipping pages (you’re good at entertaining yourself for chunks of time when you need to)
  • Playing Peekaboo, especially over the hallway wall
  • Belly-flopping onto the fluffy pillows on our bed
  • Playing with Nolan, Katie and Abby.
  • Visiting Grandma and Grandpa’s
  • Cuddling, laughing, giggling, playing, eating, and reading.

Happy First Birthday, Sweetpea!!
You are ONE.
And so much fun today, all your special friends over to play, chocolate cupcakes, candles, gifts, quiches, and yummy salads. Here are some birthday photos.
Nolan, Heather and Dave — thank you for the amazing cards stamped with Taite’s photos! And for the swimsuit and hat, we can’t wait to swim with you in summer.
Paul and Melissa — thanks for the Hide and Squeak Egg toy and for the yummy green salad. Taite wanted to open the eggs right away!
Katie, Abby, Clarissa and Lewis — thanks for the zoo pull-along toy and the ladybug and bearhunt books. Thanks for taking the birthday cake video Lewis!
Barbara — thanks for the cute clothes and book/CD and adorable little sign — it will be hanging on my door.
Grandma and Grandpa — thanks for the balloons, the Taite’s day sign, and the rubber mat, blanket and gifts.
And to my family far away, thank you for the birthday wishes by phone Oma and Opa, and Aunt Myrna. The parcel arrived but it’s at the post office and that means I get another gift on Monday! Thanks to my cousins for the cute French sorting toy. Aunt Myrna and Uncle Jossef, thank you for the adorable little pink jailbird pj’s!! It was so sweet of you to send them and I can’t wait to wear them to beddybise.
Aunt Barb and Uncle Dan, thank you for the wooden duck pull along toy… I can almost walk now and will be pulling it soon!
Mommy and Daddy say sorry for this global online “thank you” but it might be awhile before actual thank you notes go out given the ones for Christmas and Daddy’s birthday haven’t been done yet. (Not to mention Mommy’s from last October!) So this is better than nothing.
More thoughts on your first birthday later, for now, it’s on to the dishes and to relax a little.
Gifts from mommy and daddy — a new Corolle doll, Radio Flyer wagon, and a color and shapes learning puzzle.
Happy Taite’s Day! Sweet dreams our little angel. We love you.

We just arrived back home last night after a trip to Laguna Beach, 6.5 hours drive. You were terrific on the drive down, but shortly after arrival you got sick with a flu or some stomach upset, and were vomiting for 5 hours, every hour through the night. You’d look up at me as if to say “Why is this happening?” and I wished there was a way it could be me and not you going through that. Oh, it’s awful! But next day you perked up, not all yourself still but much better. About 24 hours later your dad got a flu and then he was down for the count. So it wasn’t the trip we had in mind as your first roadtrip down the coast, but there were some good moments.

We just arrived back home last night after a trip to Laguna Beach, 6.5 hours drive. You were great on the drive down, but shortly after arrival you got sick with a flu or some stomach upset, and were vomiting for 5 hours, every hour through the night. You’d look up at me as if to say “Why is this happening?” and I wished there was a way it could be me and not you going through that. Oh, it’s awful! But next day you perked up, not all yourself still but much better. About 24 hours later your dad got a flu and then he was down for the count. It wasn’t the trip we had planned!

This time, a year ago, we were in the hospital, awaiting your arrival. It’s hard to believe a year has gone by already. I remember that moment I saw you for the first time, the fluttering in my heart as you were placed on my chest after the 37 hours (and 8 months) of anticipation. I remember as you popped your head out, this frail little wiggly being, all gooey and warm and pink, you wailed and looked around so alert and curious. And here you are, turning one. A whole year passed by during which you’ve made me a mom and you became my most precious one.

How lucky we all are to have you.
